Church Governing Bodies and Organization

1. The General Assembly

The Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) is a Protestant denomination which was organized in 1973 by conservative churches when they separated from the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUSA) in opposition to the long-developing theological liberalism. Currently over 1500 churches and 220,000 communicant members belong to the PCA.

2. The Presbytery

A Presbytery consists of group pastors and churches connected to one another within a geographical region. KCPC currently belongs to the Korean Capital Presbytery.

3. The Session

The church Session consists of the senior pastor, the associate pastor and the elders who are elected and installed to active service by the congregation. The Session represents the Spiritual Government of the Church and is responsible for spiritual leadership. The Session takes care of the guidance and direction of the ministry of the church, including the responsibilities in the matters such as the employment of church staff, the installation of elders and deacons, the providing of the worship and communion service, the development and supervision of the church school and the educational program, the providing of opportunities for evangelism and missions, the calling for congregation meetings, the establishment of the annual budget, and authorization of the buying, mortgaging, or the selling of real property (PCA Constitution Chapter 12 Section 5).

4. The Church Board

Within the constitution of PCA, there exists a board of deacons. However, in accordance with the tradition of the Presbyterian Churches of Korea, the Korean churches establish a church board. The church board consists of the pastors, elders in active service, emeritus elders, retired elders, ordained deacons, deacons, and anyone appointed by the Session (Regulation Chapter 9 Section 40). The purpose of the church board is to serve the church in order to achieve objectives in the areas of evangelism, congregational fellowship, service, and church financial management under the policy and guidance of the church session.
